Cruising involves learning the lifestyle behind the world of sailing. We sail on a larger keel boat, usually at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club. Racing at the University of Georgia is sailing using smaller 420 boats and competing against other inter-collegiate sailing teams.
What will I learn from being on the cruising team?
Cruising teaches many lifelong skills. Not only will you learn how to work as a team and problem solve on board but you will also learn how to navigate a course and live on a boat. In addition, you will have the opportunity to receive ASA sailing certifications from our experienced instructor Jill Jinks.
How much time commitment is it?
We will have meetings at the Lake Lanier Sailing Club about twice a month depending on weather conditions. There will also be instructional courses offered in Athens.
What if I have never sailed before?
No prior sailing is needed! Our team consists of sailors of a variety of levels. We have some who have been sailing for their whole lives and some who joined the club to see what sailing is all about.
What if I don’t have a car, or cannot transport myself?
There are many people who are willing to carpool and will help you get to the lake.
